The skills used to win at chess are similar to those needed in any type of competition, and there are things you can do to keep your mind sharp and ready for the next match.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness has become somewhat of a buzzword over the years. However, it is an excellent method for improving mental control. Mindfulness is a useful way to exercise the mind, focus on the present, acknowledge feelings and focus on your breathing. Gaining control of your mind in this way can increase focus and mental wellbeing. Mindfulness techniques and allowing yourself the time to focus and meditate will bring many benefits.

Practice

As the saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect’, and this is true for any game. Playing the game over and over, and trying out different strategies, will help you flex your analytical muscles. These skills are useful across a number of games, whether you are preparing for your next chess match or for a poker tournament. Poker is another game that is great for developing mental agility.

Positive Thinking

Having a positive mindset which results in looking for the positives in situations is an excellent way to build confidence and self-esteem. Approaching each match with a positive attitude, focused on winning will go a long way to giving you success. The strong, analytical skills used in chess can be translated into many other games. Poker and other card games can be an exciting and new way to flex your mental muscles. Taking a break from playing chess and trying something new is an excellent way to refresh the mind.

3 Strategy Games You Can Get Very Good At https://greenpointchess.org/3-strategy-games-you-can-get-very-good-at/ Tue, 05 Dec 2017 08:35:19 +0000 https://greenpointchess.org/?p=51 ...read more]]> Gambling is not always a game of chance. Yes, there is a great deal of luck involved, but the smart players know that you create your own luck. How else do you imagine people are able to make a living from poker or roulette, for example? There has to be a roadmap out there somewhere, and today we will try and point you in the right direction.

Roulette

The wheel can be beaten. It has been done before, and it can be done again. However, you will not beat the wheel using the strategies sold in every book shop in front of a casino. Forget the mathematical formulae and games of chance. The casinos know the math better than anyone else. For roulette, the strategy is in the physics. This is a wheel that is governed by physics. Bet small amounts and learn its bias. You could use a computer with specific software to help you analyse the motion, but it is likely that if you get caught they’ll throw you out. Use the eye and learn. That’s it.

Blackjack

Blackjack is much harder to master. If you don’t like memorizing strategies, blackjack might not be the game for you. Just remember that blackjack is about beating the dealer, but don’t be so hard that he drops out. Tricky and confusing but that’s it.

Poker

Poker can make you a millionaire. Of the three strategy games discussed, poker requires the most patience and presence of mind. If you get emotional, you will lose. Poker is like a long-term project. To master this game you will need, among other things, to have a coach. Learn under someone. Study your weaknesses. You can win at strategy games, but you will have to learn and start from a place of humility. This is possible, but only for those strong enough to accept help.

Poker and Chess – Two Brothers, Different Mothers https://greenpointchess.org/poker-and-chess-two-brothers-different-mothers/ Mon, 04 Dec 2017 10:42:58 +0000 https://greenpointchess.org/?p=45 ...read more]]> Poker and chess; as different as chalk and cheese you may think. But the iconic card game and board game do share one common element; something that starts with an ‘s’ – Strategy.

All about Strategy

Neither game can be won without an element of planning. Your next move could very well decide whether you win or lose, hence the need for strategy. And that cannot happen without first gaining some insight into the game. This is one reason why poker stands apart from other card games, having achieved a status of its own. You need more than just dumb luck to win a round.

Information is Key

You probably know that you need to strategize, but did you know that information is what drives the strategy forward? Take chess, for instance. A player needs to learn the various moves a chess piece can make before even formulating a plan. The same holds true for poker. There are certain ground rules that will serve you well, and with which you will need to be familiar. It may feel like a bit of a bore, but think of it as a stepping stone to chalking up one win after another. After all, who wouldn’t like to show off their poker skills to their friends, family or even an online group of players.

Keep Calm and Carry On

It is not an exaggeration to say that there is a deluge of information out there, especially online. The question then is what and whom do you follow. One tip is to pick the brains of any friend who plays poker. They could be an office colleague or a bowling mate, for instance. Now, this is for those who are starting out. For the more experienced players, we recommend the loose-aggressive poker strategy (LAG). Whether you are a beginner or a professional, the trick is to keep playing and keep sharpening your strategies.

Perfecting Your Texas Hold’em Poker Game https://greenpointchess.org/perfecting-your-texas-holdem-poker-game/ Fri, 17 Nov 2017 09:15:58 +0000 https://greenpointchess.org/?p=37 ...read more]]> As with any game, or any skill, poker is something that you can get better at with practice. If you’re a novice, or even a high roller, here are some tips to get you up to the next level of Texas Hold’em poker.

Get To Grips with the Rules

First things first, for novices, it’s important to understand the rules of Texas Hold’em. It’s a good idea to pick a four-colour deck option if you can, especially if you’re playing online. This is to avoid the possibility of confusing one suit for another, which can definitely happen in the frantic pace of an online game. It only takes a few clicks on the Internet for you to brush up fully on the rules, so save yourself potential embarrassment and financial losses now by taking a little time to fully become familiar with the rules before you dive in. This way, you’ll also know if you have a good hand or bad hand.

Having a Good Hand

Although learning the rules will give you some idea if you have a good hand, you will only really learn when you start playing on a regular basis. If your cards are less than 10, then it’s probably advisable to fold. Being patient is the key; the good hands will eventually come. Indeed, in any poker strategy, patience is the key.

Patience!

Even if you’re an experienced Texas Hold’em player, it can be very easy to get excited when playing Texas Hold’em and go all in with a great looking hand when does it comes around. However, seasoned players will tell you it’s advisable often to be patient and wait for higher value cards. This way, you’ll be more likely to reap in bigger profits in the long term. It’s probably also advisable to avoid bluffing initially, until you become more of an experienced player. Best of luck!

America’s Most Impressive Chess Prodigy https://greenpointchess.org/americas-most-impressive-chess-prodigy/ Fri, 01 Sep 2017 13:59:48 +0000 https://greenpointchess.org/?p=18 ...read more]]> It is not every day that we get to see a rising star in action. We always hear about the accomplishments of our greatest prodigies after they have achieved whatever it was that they were good at, and these revelations tend to come in the form of a book or a movie that outlines their road to success.

Awonder Liang

Luckily for us, we currently have the opportunity to write our own story of the child chess star that is currently rising to the top. Awonder Liang is an amazing young player who is considered by many to be a Grandmaster at the game.

The Youngest Grandmaster

FIDE has provided proof in writing that the young, 14-year-old player is, in fact, a registered Grandmaster and that makes him the youngest Grandmaster in the world today. Hollywood! Where are you when we need you?Liang is in line to become the youngest player to ever attend and win at the World Championships where he will go up against some of the best players in the world. If he wins in the upcoming competitions, for example, he will be the youngest Grandmaster to beat top tier players in an international championship ever. That is both incredible and exciting and we can’t wait to see how it turns out for him.

The Road to Success

On his road to success, Liang has already beaten several masters and other Grandmasters in competitions around the world. When he was eight years old, he beat Daniel Fernandez who was a U.S. Champion, when he was nine years old he defeated the Grandmaster Larry Kaufman, and there have been many others who have had the pleasure of seeing this young player in action. It is hard to know what it is exactly that drives this young player to be the best. Clearly, he knows the game very well and can predict what other players are going to do with a natural and almost inhuman perception, but what is more fascinating is the depth of focus that the young player maintains on the board. Liang rarely looks up from the board when he is playing and when he does; he is looking at the other player. It will be very exciting to see if Liang is on target to be the best player in the world.

Chess Championships https://greenpointchess.org/chess-championships/ Wed, 23 Aug 2017 13:58:28 +0000 https://greenpointchess.org/?p=16 ...read more]]> Chess has long been considered the best game to measure mental strength and aptitude in its players. Because of that, the game has been played competitively for an extremely long time, and every competition, year after year, has endeavoured to find the best minds in the world. Now, it should be noted that when we say an extremely long time, that is exactly what we mean. People have been competing at chess since Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. And perhaps even before that!

A History of Champions

As a result, throughout our modern history, there has always been a player that is considered to be the best. You sometimes hear of one player or another being hailed as the best and might have found yourself wondering which player it could be. Chances are high that these players may well have been the best in the world, but they may have held their titles at different times.

FIDE

The World Chess Championship is probably one of the most widely known and respected chess tournaments, and it is through this competition that many of the world’s best players have been discovered. One organization that has hosted the most World Chess Championships throughout history goes by the acronym FIDE which is a French acronym meaning ‘International Federation of Chess’. The first competition hosted by this organization was held in 1948, and the winner of the first-ever championship competition run by the FIDE was Mikhail Botvinnik. For many years, the competition continued to grow stronger and more influential but it had some issues when one of its best players ever decided to move away from the organization that hosted the event. Garry Kasparov is considered by many to be one of the best chess players ever due to the amount of time he spent as the reigning champion. His split from the organization created extensive ripples in the chess world that shook the entire foundation and accountability of the processes that was then responsible for deciding the criteria to identify a true champion. Kasparov’s split took place in 1993, and there remained a significant void as to who was then considered to be the best player in the world until such time as the chess world was finally able to unify the players once again in 2006.

The Greatest Chess Player of All Time https://greenpointchess.org/the-greatest-chess-player-of-all-time/ Wed, 16 Aug 2017 13:57:51 +0000 https://greenpointchess.org/?p=14 ...read more]]> When it comes to figuring out who the best chess player of all time is, it is likely that there is one name that has already come to your mind, especially if you were growing up in America during the release of the Hollywood film entitled, “Searching for Bobby Fischer”. Although definitely one of the best players in the history of the game, he may not have been the absolute best, all-around player to grace the chess board.

Garry Kasparov

There was another player who won more world chess championships than anyone else and is still considered by most to be one of the most influential players of all time. He may not be the best of the best when compared to all the greats, but based on several factors he can be held near the very top. Garry Kasparov held the World Championship for about 15 years, from 1985 to 2000, and was the first chess player to play against and defeat the chess-playing super computers that were developed to learn how these types of players got so good. There have been many players with whom Kasparov has had very close matches, but during his reign as champion he was always able to defeat any and all challengers with almost inhuman ease. The list of notable players is long, and to truly define a best player that has ever existed is quite impossible, due to all the variables at play that are used to determine greatness. However, despite the obvious challenges that go with finding the true best, Garry Kasparov remains one of our favourites.
